My best friends

Ever since I first stumbled across them - in Brewer's Phrase and Fable, I think - I have loved the Five Wits. They're certainly mentioned in Shakespeare, but I suspect they go back further than that: Chaucer, maybe, although if you get me to drink enough, I'll start making claims about the Ancients (that's Greek, to you).

They represent the five qualities of intelligence. Once you've got them in your head, you start to see how often a full, balanced set seems to be missing from so much of what gets said and what gets done.

I love them. And they are my friends. They could be yours, too.
